This might get buried, or might get voted down to hell, but Im pretty hell bent on getting this off my mind. Seeing all the comments made by the mainlander Chinese about the situation has made me disgusted with my own race, and I didnt think the propaganda machine would develop to this extent. But at the same time theres a incredible amount of people that really dont know the thinking process of Mainland Chinese here on r/nba and basically in NA about this situation including myself at the time. I cant completely vouch for them, but I for sure thought that my friends and family in china wouldnt be at the same level as these people, so i had to ask them what they thought about the situation (on weChat). "Oh youre right I cant see Rockets stuff haha" "Yeah Moreys dumb for supporting terrorists" "Might have to get VPN again" These dudes were apathetic to the entire situation. I thought it was pretty fucked up to attribute Morey to supporting terrorists but I realized thats all the knew about the Hong Kong crisis. At first I thought it was ironic, considering a small, but decent amount of Chinese people, at least in my age group/ generation, have used VPN and these guys included. Unfortunately there are three things: 1. VPN is much more difficult/ more of a hassle to use nowadays with the Pooh in power, 2. They havent experienced political freedom and cannot comprehend why the protesters are even protesting for these freedoms, and 3. People in China just dont give a shit. At all. These guys can make the effort to search for the information, but they dont because it takes effort and a lot of it. Furthermore, with only a few news stations all sharing basically the same opinion on things, its hard to really move past that state of view. I know its a shitty example... but its similar to the people that swear on god that FOX news in America is the only real source of information, except these dudes cant even access CNN without a VPN/ taking a risk. Thus, why bother? At this point my father stopped me from going any further in the slight case of repercussions (this specific convo was in a weChat family groupchat). I realized for most Chinese fans, its not worth the risk TO get angry with the government (prime example Rockets fan that burned flag, who by the way, will not get harvested (lol) but will serve a couple months in jail and possibly lose his job and other bad stuff as an example). In the end, I learned that you are allowed to criticize the government, even publicly, but youll probably get jumped by a bunch of nationalistic thugs before the government even acknowledges you (idk if this was true) In the end, the people that do care enough about watching the NBA have their accesses already prepared if the NBA disappears from Tencent, the people that dont will look elsewhere. The percentage of nationalistic people that did get triggered from Moreys comments, whether they are outside China or using a VPN, will continue to post NMSL - ni ma si le - your mom is dead and racist shit with the CPP bots until they get bored, and overall only the chinese government wins in this situation. The Morey stuff will blow over here quickly once Ben Simmons hits some 3s and our quick reacting, short term memory loss asses will again focus on something new. Either way the situation makes you really appreciate your freedom of speech...
